I know its little late to have Froyo while Gingerbread is already in the midst of development. No choice but my cellphone just got this system update and got it upgraded last night. There are few major changes and improvements I’ve got after the upgrade I wish to highlight:
Product Manufacturer: HTC
Product Model: Legend
ANDROID FROYO 2.2 REVIEW
1. Wifi Hotspot
Now you may get your laptop, iPod touch, or iPad online via Android Froyo by turning your phone into a portable hotspot. You just need to enable your portable hotspot in the Wireless settings area. Name your access point, optionally assign a WPA2 password, and any Wi-Fi enabled device in the area will be able to see and connect to it. Up to 8 devices can connect to the Froyo access point.
2. Multilingual Keyboard Languages
Multiple languages is being added into the keyboard allowing users to switch between multiple Latin-based input languages, and allowing speech recognition which letting you to convert the spoken speech into words.
3. Improved Speed & Performance
Two aspects: Android apps & Browsers. It speeds up Android apps by 2 to 5x for most of the apps. But in my opinion, 5x that much??? Not that extremely fast but at least better performance than in Eclair. As for browser, is being equipped with a new Javascript Engine named as Google’s V8 which speeds up JavaScript execution time by 2 – 3x.
4. Improved Application Manager
Froyo’s new application manager is enhanced by separating to tabbed interface which lets you see apps by what’s been downloaded, installed, what’s running, and what lives on the SD card.
5. New Android Market
For all the apps you have in your phone, the fact that you had to update apps from the Android Market one by one prior to Froyo was really simply makes life easier which adding a ‘Update All’ button for you.
6. Enhanced Gmail Application
For Gmail user like me, you will like this update. You can now see the labels with colors just like the ordinary Gmail at browser. Updates include the sender name, star, reply, and the more actions buttons. You no longer have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of an email to reply. You can also tap the “Show quoted text” link to expand the conversation in the same manner you can in the browser.
7. More New Apps
You can see there are new apps installed in Froyo like:
a. Google’s Latitude
b. Places
c. Navigation
d. Flashlight
e. Gallery (Photos in Eclair)
f. Camera? (Came across with some forums saying the camera application is being enhanced with better controls and interface, but I did not receive this update! )
8. Stunning Effect
Better effect for screen transition (similar to iPhone which you can see ‘zoom-in-zoom-out’ effect) instead of slide to left or right in Eclair when you opening / closing an app.
Overall this is a great update I have for now. Sorry lah if I’m outdated and not to blame on me but HTC :p Gingerbread is already here and I just got Froyo. Hmm. Btw, what’s your favorite improvement? Do let me know :p Oh ya, do try this awesome home launcher app – LauncherPro, go get it @ the Market and explore 🙂
